First time rafting in Bali? Tips for your first trip
10 October 2026By Family Trips Balifirst timetipsrafting
Never been in a raft? These tips help you choose the right river, prepare for the day and enjoy every minute on the water.

A first rafting trip is easier than it looks: a river guide steers every raft, and the day starts with a safety briefing. These tips make it easier still.
Before you book
- Choose the right river. For a first trip, Ayung River Rafting (Grade II–III) is the gentler choice. Telaga Waja Rafting (Grade III–IV) is for when you want more action.
- Check the steps. Getting to and from the river can mean walking steps. The river facts on each trip page tell you more.
- Tell us about health conditions. Pregnancy, recent injuries, heart or back problems: tell us before you book. At checkout you also enter the age of every guest.
- Pick your start time. Trips start at 09:00, 10:00, 11:00, 12:00 and 13:00.
- Hotel transfer or not? Some packages include a return hotel transfer (with a minimum number of guests, shown on the package). With the others you meet at the operator's start point.
On the day
- Wear clothes that can get wet and shoes that stay on your feet — see what to wear for rafting.
- Listen to the briefing. Learn the paddle commands — forward, back, stop, hold on — and what to do if you fall in.
- Keep your helmet and life jacket on, fastened and tight, for the whole time on the water.
- Paddle when your guide says so. The raft goes where the team paddles; the guide steers.
- If you fall in, stay calm. Float on your back with your feet up and pointing downstream, hold on to your paddle if you can, and wait for your guide's help.
Afterwards
Change into dry clothes, drink some water and enjoy the feeling. Liked it? Next time, try the other river.
